Close Readings
As described by Matthew Pinsker, Professor at Dickinson College, a close reading is a carefully crafted analytical essay on a primary source document which contains three principle elements :
- Text (the words understood literally)
- Context (historical events surrounding the words)
- Subtext (the message behind the words)
